Meeting: LEAPS Interns meeting

This afternoon I attended the 2nd LEAPS Interns meeting in conference room 2251, 2nd floor, Johnson County Admin building. Colin Smalley, an intern with the AIMS department was the facilitator. The topic of discussion was the MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) a test that determines 'what type' of person you are. All of the interns took the test previous to the meeting and got there scores back at the meeting. The test indicated I was an ENFJ (Which stands for Extroverted Intuition Feelings Justice), which was interesting to find out because I had previously predicted myself to be a ISTJ.

The next LEAPS meeting is to be held on 11/30/05 at the same location and the topic will be Resume Writing/Interview Skills. I will be participating with the role of scribe. (We rotate positions between the 8 student interns)

Field Work: GPS with Jim Bills Part II

Today Jim Bills, Nazar Albarghsh, and myself drove to Mission, Kansas to do some training and checking of certain manholes. Jim and I went over using the GPS reciever and "popping" manhole lids to check that the number of pipes and direction they travel match what is on the maps. Then Jim and Nazar walked around to check other aspects of the map for accuracy while I "ran" the GPS reciever. Operating the GPS reciever is a relatively simple process. First you set up and level the tripod. Then on the GPS touchscreen you open the Mapping software and watch it acquire satellite signals and the WAAS beacon. Once its ready you select, create new waypoint, JCW sewers, and click start. It will then begin to log as indicated by the top right of the screen (you will see a number counting up from 0) You wait till it gets to 600 (seconds, which is 10 minutes) and then click stop recording and move onto antoher manhole. While the GPS is running on the second manhole return to the first, lift the lid with the hook and compare the number of pipes to those on the map.

Project: Plan filing

Although not as thrilling as designing things and going out in the field, Nazar Albarghsh was able to find me a new project to do which involves filing numerous (could be thousands) of Mylar(s) (A registered tradename of Du Pont's clear polyester film. This durable film is used for stripping and outputting architectural and CAD drawings.) The drawings came in one massive pile and need to be filed into individual districts and then into LSD (lateral sewer district). I'm sure I'll get a picture of this pile up soon.

Event: Sunset Ridge Office Building Tour

Today, I was fortunate enough to get to tour the new Sunset Ridge office building, which is under construction at 119th and Ridgeview in Olathe, KS. The building is the future home of JCW (planned to move in in early 2006). Several county departments will be housed together in this new building. Personally, this move will make my trips to JCW much shorter, because I already pass this site eveyr day on my way to school and back. Here are some photographs taken by Bob Koch.

This is a snapshot of the second story area, near where JCW will be located. The ductwork and wire conduit is exposed because the access flooring has not been installed yet.

This is the second story "open-office" zone of the JCW office area. The access flooring in this area has been installed and is awaiting the installation of additional wiring (such as networking) and the installation of cubicles.

This is the approxamite area where Randy Robinson (Administration) and John Metzler (Engineering) wil have their offices.
